"Remembering Charlie and Anne..."

By Chief Fred Maas, SIB Police

One of the first persons I met when I came to work for the City and its Police Department almost 12 years ago, was Charlie Wachsberg.  I remember him vividly because he was a big man but had a soft, gentle voice and even more gentle demeanor.  His smile was warm and heartfelt.  He welcomed me to the city and offered any assistance we may need to get started.  I never forgot Charlie or his lovely wife Anne for making me feel so welcome.

Later on, I learned a little more about Charlie.  I was helping determine the uniforms that the newly created police department would use when I was given the “patch” that the city adopted as its seal and symbol.  I was struck by its beauty, color and composition as it truly captured the beauty and resources of the city.  To this day, that patch designed by Charles Wachsberg is one of the most sought after by collectors around the country.  To this day, our officers are proud to wear that patch that serves as a daily reminder of who we are, where we work and why we are there!

Not many people get the opportunity or have the talent to make a lasting impact for a lifetime on a city and its employees and residents.  But someone like Charlie, with humility his greatest asset and quality, just takes it in stride and says, “whatever I can do to help.”

Over the years, the police department came to know Charles and Anne well because they were always there to help us and to serve.  They always supported the officers from the very beginning and the officers came to respect and appreciate them also.  I always felt Charlie had one unselfish goal:  to make Sunny Isles Beach a better place for his neighbors and his colleagues.  It was never for Charlie or about Charlie.

Recently, we learned that personal issues are leading them away from us and to a new life and location in Houston, Texas where they have family.  Initially, I was shocked and very disappointed as were all the officers and city employees who truly knew Charles and Anne.  We will miss them, their contributions to making the city a better place and the beauty of Charlies’ art and painting.  But I am reminded just like the first day on the job, that I have to look no further than my shoulder, to get a glimpse of our friend thru the patch we wear on our uniform. Yes, it tells me that the miles may separate us but we will always be connected by the “seal of the city and friendship.”  God Bless You Charles and Anne and may your coming years be happy, healthy, successful in your new surroundings.
