City Recognized by Florida League of Cities for "Going Green"

This May the Florida League of Cities announced the publication of its 2008 City Innovations Showcase which included “Government Center Goes Green” a detailed description of the recycling at the city of Sunny Isles Beach Government Center.

The maintenance staff in the Government Center is doing its part to save money and energy by continuing with a new larger scale recycling policy. New recyclable receptacles are in place throughout city hall; including blue recycle bins for regular office paper, large red bins for aluminum cans, plastics 1 & 2, glass, cardboard and newspapers alike. This form of gathering recyclable material is often referred to as “commingling” which literally means “mixing together.” These mixed items are later separated at the recycling station. We now recycle items such as soda cans, newspapers and various plastics which previously were being thrown away with general trash and waste.

These new recycle bins are just the start of the City’s conscious effort to help preserve the environment. The City also re-cycles dry-cell batteries and inkjet cartridges and has implemented a computerized system to control the lights and air conditioning usage throughout the entire Government Center. The staff hopes to set an example for all its citizens and visitors with these innovations. Any questions please call the Public Works Department at 305.792.1711.
