Where can I park?
By: Robert C. Solera, Community Development Director

Along with having the foresight to purchase park lands and create neighborhood parks, the city planners saw the need to create various types of parking areas for its residents. These include:

  • Open street parking.
  • Resident-only street parking.
  • Commercial vehicle/recreational equipment parking.

Each of these parking areas has its own uses, rules and fees. The City Commission recently made some changes to the parking ordinances that take effect June 1, 2008. The latest information is included for the various types of parking in the descriptions provided below.

Open Street Parking
Uses: Open street parking is meant for short-term use and available in the vicinities of the Senator Gwen Margolis Park, 17815 North Bay Road and at the new Pelican Community Park, 18115 North Bay Road. The open street parking areas are shown in Parking for Gwen Margolis Park Diagrams (a) & (c).

Rules: The rules for open street parking include:

  • Available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • Available during business hours and when there are events.
  • Decals are not required.
  • Overnight parking is not allowed.

Fees: Parking is free.

Resident-Only Street Parking
Uses: To provide residents living in multi-unit dwellings parking for:

  • a second or third vehicle. Often apartment/condo dwellers get one parking space per unit and those with more than one car need extra street parking.
  • a small commercial vehicle. Often apartment/condos do not allow commercial vehicles to park on their premises.

The resident-only parking areas are along North Bay Road, 180 and 181 Drives, Church Street and 177 Drive as shown in Parking for Residents Only Diagrams (b) & (d). Signs are currently posted indicating these resident-only parking areas.

  • Parking available 24/7.
  • Parking allowed for small commercial vehicles with no more than two axels.
  • Decals for small commercial vehicles required as of June 1, 2008.
  • Campers are not allowed.

Fees: Resident-only decals cost $50.00 per month.

City decals for resident-only parking are available for purchase through the Community Development Department, Sunny Isles Beach Government Center – 3rd floor, 18070 Collins Avenue and available for personal and small commercial vehicles such as: cars, pickups, SUVs and small vans.

Decals issued to residents prior to June 1st are valid until they expire.

Commercial Vehicle/Recreational Equipment Parking
Uses: Commercial vehicle/recreational equipment parking spaces are available for residents to park their larger commercial vehicles and recreational equipment. This area is for larger commercial vehicles with no more than two-axels.

Parking spots are located under the William Lehman Causeway in the rear of the parking lot adjacent to the public works compound. The City will be installing signs to indicate the area assigned for this parking purpose.

Rules:

  • City parking decal required.
  • Parking available 24/7.
  • Parking allowed for large commercial vehicles and recreational equipment with no more than two axels.
  • Decals required as of June 1, 2008.
  • Available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
  • The Community Development Department will provide specific guidelines upon application.

  • Application Fee/Renewal Fee - $75.00 annually.
