The South Florida Water Management District (SFWMD) manages and protects the water resources of the South Florida region and provides information about conserving water and current water restrictions. Included here are some water conservation tips and the current water restrictions.
Why Conserve?
Water conservation is the most cost-effective and environmentally sound way to reduce our demand for water. This stretches our supplies farther, and protects our sources of water. The entire U.S. uses less water than it did 25 years ago, even though there are more people! Using less water also puts less pressure on our sewage treatment facilities, and uses less energy for water heating.
Three Water Conservation Tips
- If you're taking a shower, don't waste cold water while waiting for hot water to reach the shower head. Catch that water in a container to use on your inside/outside plants or to flush your toilet. Saves 200 to 300 gallons a month.
- Turn off the water while brushing your teeth. Turn it on when its time to rinse. Saves three gallons each day.
- Turn off the water while shaving. Fill the bottom of the sink with a few inches of water to rinse your razor. Saves three gallons each day.
Water Restrictions
South Florida continues to experience one of the driest times in our history, resulting in a water shortage. Mandatory water restrictions remain in effect. Odd or Even?
Residents and businesses of Broward, Collier, Miami-Dade, Monroe, St. Lucie and coastal areas of Lee, Martin and Palm Beach counties, including the City of West Palm Beach are limited to a two-day-per-week landscape irrigation schedule with two "watering windows".
- Odd street addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes on Wednesdays and Saturdays from 12 a.m. to 10 a.m. and/or 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
- Even street addresses may irrigate lawns and landscapes on Thursdays and Sundays from 12 a.m. to 10 a.m. and/or 4 p.m. to 11:59 p.m.
