Life in the City
By Bari Auerbach

Shopping List

Thanks to the city’s financial strength, Sunny Isles Beach can afford to fund purchases and services that enhance quality of life. Budget expenditures facilitate everything from capital improvements to cultural events – but wouldn’t it be nice if items like these could be on the city’s shopping list too…

Stairmasters and Treadmills
– The City Commission recently approved the purchase of more comfortable bus benches – but it would be great if cardio equipment could also be acquired so while waiting for the bus to come, you could also get a great workout! This innovative exercise initiative would surely help make Sunny Isles Beach one of the “fittest” model cities in America!

Unlimited Text Messaging – If the city paid for people to send unlimited text messages about how wonderful it is to live in Sunny Isles Beach, it could be the marketing coup of the millennium! The only catch is, everyone would have to learn new text messaging acronyms like: WYWHISS (wish you were here instead of shoveling snow); MTIBTY (my tan is better than yours); and DYWYCWTTB? (don’t you wish you could walk to the beach?)

Video iPods - It would also be well worth the expenditure if the city bought thousands of video iPods to distribute around the world - playing nothing but documentaries about how wonderful it is to live and vacation in Sunny Isles Beach – Florida’s Riviera. The City Manager could even apply for a publicity grant from Apple to help pay for the effort to download more residents and visitors!

Tickets to Baseball Games – If the city invested in purchasing Marlins season tickets for all resident fans, this could help increase attendance at games. Then to show appreciation, the team could agree to help coach little leaguers at Pelican Community Park or even decide to build a new mini-stadium where The Rascal House used to be!

Gas Rebates – Instead of lowering property tax millage rates when budget revenues increase, the city could fund gasoline rebates so everyone scrounging for loose change under their sofas could afford to keep paying pumped up prices…Better yet, the city could monetarily reward residents who start taking the city’s shuttle bus and give up driving to help alleviate traffic on Collins Avenue.

Ice Cream for Everyone – With summer just around the corner, temperatures are going to soar, which studies show can often lead to “hot tempers” and an increase in crime. So to keep things calm, cool and collected in Sunny Isles Beach, the city should consider creating “Ice Cream Sundays.” Once a week on Sundays, all residents and visitors would be invited to enjoy free ice cream to perpetuate the city’s reputation for being home of “the sweet life!”
