The City Charter provides for a City Commission that is vested with all legislative powers of the City. The Mayor and four Commissioners are elected to serve for four year terms.

Registered voters Citywide elect a Mayor; three residential area commissioners, (one residing in each designated area) and one commissioner residing anywhere in the City.

Elections are held every odd-numbered year, on the second Tuesday following the first Monday in November.

  Next election: November 10, 2009.
• Northern Area - Seat 1
  bounded on the north by the southern boundary of the Town of Golden Beach and on the south by the engineering line of 175 Street.
  Next election: November 2011.
• Central Area - Seat 2
  bounded on the north by the engineering line of 175 Street and on the south by the south property line of the Winston Towers Complex and its westward and eastward extensions.
  Next election: November 10, 2009.
• Southern Area - Seat 3
  bounded on the: north by the south property line of the Winston Towers Complex and its westward and eastward extensions, and on the south by the north boundary of Haulover Park.
  Next election: November 2011.
