Commissioner - Gerald (Gerry) Goodman

Biography
Gerry Goodman was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York graduating from Abraham Lincoln High School in 1943. He served two and a half years during World War II in the United States Navy and settled in Brooklyn establishing businesses in the manufacturing of home furnishings and interior decorating.
Commissioner Goodman was married forty-nine and a half years to his wife Ann, who passed away in 1997. They had four children who have produced six grandchildren. Gerry is currently engaged to Lila Sterling, a widow with three children and four grandchildren.
Participating in community affairs and politics became a way of life. Goodman served as President and Founder of Temple Shaare Ementh. He was President of Farragut Redwood Civic Association and was elected to District 18 Community School Board six times, serving 15 years. During those years he also served as a Cubmaster and Assistant Scoutmaster, volunteered as Chancellor of the Knights of Pythias America Lodge.

After retiring, Goodman moved to South Florida in 1988, falling in love with the Sunny Isles Beach area. Before his commission days, Goodman became active as a board member in Concerned Citizens of Northeast Dade, and was also a member of the Committee to Incorporate Sunny Isles Beach. He served on the Citizens Planning Advisory Committee, which provided input for major projects such as the Comprehensive Plan and Zoning Code, affecting the redevelopment of Sunny Isles Beach. In the past Commissioner Goodman served on the Board of Directors of Temple B’nai Zion.
Goodman presently is member of the Jewish War Veterans, Aventura Post #698, serves on the board of the Concerned Citizens of Northeast Dade and the Democratic Club of Sunny Isles Beach. He is 1st Vice President of Winston Towers 500 Building and is a member of the Board of Trustees of Aventura Hospital, a 407 acute care medical/surgery facility.

Commissioner Goodman has served as commissioner of Sunny Isles Beach since September 12, 2001, one of those years filling the position of Vice Mayor. Goodman is also the city’s representative to the Miami-Dade Fire Board. He is currently the commission liaison for the Traffic and Safety Committee. During Commissioner Goodman’s tenure the traffic committee sponsored the publication of a pedestrian brochure and a Bike Rodeo for the youth of the City.
